To start, it is imperative we identify the reason why he/she does not know how to swim:

Fear of water: Some adults may have a fear of water that they need to overcome.

Lack of confidence: Adults who haven't learned to swim earlier may lack confidence in their ability.

Physical limitations: Some adults may have physical limitations, such as joint pain or injury, which may make it difficult for them to swim.

Learning style: Adults may have different learning styles, and what works for one person may not work for another.

Time constraints: Adults often have busy schedules and may struggle to find the time to practise swimming.

Self-consciousness: Adults may be self-conscious about their abilities or appearance in a swimsuit.

Prior bad experiences: Some adults may have had negative experiences with water in the past, which may make it difficult for them to learn to swim.
Basic steps to get an adult to swim
Addressing underlying issues/concerns is fundamental in getting started. Coach Lee’s guiding principles: for one to have self-belief and to make the best of any situation. He encourages an open conversation to establish the underlying reason and to take mindful steps to address the concerns.
Lessons are then personalised to pace with the participant, to meet goals and expectations. i.e. having clear methods to build water confidence, establishing floating and water control before treading water or even proposing a less crowded and more conducive environment for some who might feel self-conscious.
Adult learners should expect a focus on basic water safety and confidence, after addressing their underlying issue/concerns.
Once achieved, Coach Lee will start teaching the basic strokes such as the breastroke, freestyle and backstroke. He will create frequent opportunities for practice and repetition and gradually increase difficulty, and make sure the progress is clear.
Coach Lee’s goal is to have adults take incremental steps, progress at a comfortable pace and not get discouraged.
